From Vision to Action: Advancing Conservation at Fairview Park

Endemic Environmental Services Awarded Multi-Year Contract to Advance Habitat Restoration at Costa Mesa’s Fairview Park Mesa

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Endemic Environmental Services, Inc., a California-based ecological consulting and restoration firm, has been selected by the City of Costa Mesa to lead a significant new phase of habitat restoration at Fairview Park. The seven-year, $1.3 million contract, approved by the City Council in September and reported by the Daily Pilot / Los Angeles Times, will focus on restoring approximately 15 acres of native coastal sage scrub and bluff habitat, while protecting sensitive cultural and wildlife resources.

Since 2009, Endemic Environmental Services has maintained a long-standing partnership with the City of Costa Mesa and Fairview Park, specifically serving as its primary ecological consultant and restoration team. The company has previously implemented large-scale habitat mitigation and community restoration efforts throughout the park, restoring ecological function to degraded landscapes and supporting the habitats of sensitive species, such as the California gnatcatcher and the least Bell’s vireo. This latest award builds on Endemic’s decade-long collaboration with the city and will help facilitate the city's ecological goals with the local community.

The newly approved restoration phase plans to remove invasive plants, re-establish diverse native vegetation such as black sage and California sagebrush, fiddlenecks that will flower in the spring and early summer, and purple sage, and implement protective measures for culturally sensitive areas. The project will also manage visitor impacts by removing unauthorized trails while preserving designated pathways for passive recreation. Long-term monitoring and adaptive management will ensure that native habitats remain stable and resilient in the face of changing conditions and community usage of the park.

Endemic plans to collaborate closely with the City of Costa Mesa, local tribal representatives, and community volunteers to ensure the project reflects both ecological best practices and cultural stewardship.

“This award advances our mission to deliver conservation at scale, pairing science, cultural stewardship, and community volunteers to make coastal habitats more resilient for species like the California gnatcatcher while preserving access for passive recreation,” said Endemic President and CEO, Barry Nerhus.
